You might recognize Ricardo Hurtado from Nickelodeon’s School of Rock. He plays Freddy, the new kid who brings a fresh and rebellious perspective to William B. Travis Prep School. The 17-year-old cutie dished to LaTeen about the filming process, his hair idol, and his real-life advice for the new kids in school.

What’s it like working on School of Rock?

So much fun; I’m honored to be there and everyone I work with is so talented. We’re always messing around on set and having a good time. We even created a fun game room where Aidan Miner set up his Nintendo Wii. Every time we have a break we all go in there and play Super Smash Bros.

What’s the best part of the filming process?

Getting the new script for the next episode is the coolest part. It’s kind of a burst of energy because we get to see what’s going on in the next episode.

Can you tell us a story from the set?

I got hurt doing a stunt. At 3 a.m. we were shooting the finale with the reveal of the killer and we’re fighting and doing stunts. I did all my own stunts, and I ran right into the camera and sprained my nose! But I still went on and filmed the rest of the scene. I’ll never forget that night!

Do you have a favorite scene that you’ve shot so far?

There’s this one scene in Season 2 where we can control Principal Mullins’ mind. So every time we say ‘apricot’ she turns into a chicken. We basically take advantage of this psychic thing we have. So we turn her into a chicken and we’re messing around, playing video games during school. Lance Lim, who plays Zack, has his shirt untucked, which is like a major felony at school. So, it’s super chaotic, and we build this zipline in the hallway. And I actually got to zipline! It was cool. Your character was the new kid on the show.

How similar are you to your character, Freddy?

I think Freddy and I are pretty similar. We’re both musically talented. I play drums, he plays drums. He sings, I sing. I’d like to say we’re both pretty cool, and we really are into our hair. The hair thing wasn’t even part of Freddy’s character when we first started. It kind of morphed into him because that’s how I am. I live by my motto: PHP, perfect hair placement. Every day, I’ve got to live up to the motto.

That’s so funny. Do you have a hair icon?

I really like Justin Bieber, how he used to have his hair -- not
the whole situation where it was like a helmet. The one after that. I don’t know what’s going on lately. He’s kind of changing it up, which I appreciate, but I liked his hair. He had some solid hair.

Your character was the new kid on the show. Did you ever have to deal with that in real life?

Yeah, when I was in Georgia, I went to a public school when I was in elementary school, and I got a full scholarship to a private school. I was really new. I didn’t know anyone. But I just feel like it’s a great opportunity to make friends, and to meet new people. Freddy got to go through that too. He was new, but he has awesome friends that are probably going to be lifelong friends. So you’re not going to go blonde like JB? I don’t think so. I do put some highlights in my hair, but it’s natural.

Do you have any strategies for meeting new people?

It’s easy to get nervous when you’re in a new environment, and you don’t know a lot of people. What I suggest is to go up to someone and say “Hi, what’s your name?” Just be nice, and most of the time, they’ll be nice back. They’ll be like “Hey, what’s up?” I think if you’re the first one to instigate the conversation, I think that’s the best way to make friends.

You posted an adorable pic on Valentine’s Day with Jada Facer from Melissa & Joey. What did you guys do?

Unfortunately, I was working on Valentine’s Day so I couldn’t hang out. But I did get her a box of chocolates in a heart, a rose, some candy, a teddy bear and this little stuffed animal Grumpy Cat. She enjoyed it. Later in the week, we went to dinner, and we went to see a movie. It was pretty chill. I like say I’m a romantic.

Any upcoming projects?

We’re going to start Season 3 of School of Rock this week. We just got picked up for 20 episodes which is crazy because the past two seasons have only been 13 episodes. I’m ready to get back to work and see all my buddies.
